Boreal Chickadee

This pretty brown headed chickadee is known as the Boreal Chickadee.  I have seen them a few times but never out in the open areas like the Black Capped Chickadee.  These photos were taken well inside a forested area in Nopiming.  The Boreal Chickadee lives among the conifers eating insects and seeds from the cones in the trees.  The are considered a common resident of Boreal forests and will come out to feeding stations in the winter.  According to my bird reference book they don’t tend to mix with the more common Black Capped Chickadee.

Enjoy!

Peeping Crows ?

So – today in my kitchen I am hearing that all familiar and somewhat annoying cawing of crows.  The windows were open and they sounded terribly close today so I thought I would take a look see . . . This silly crow was sitting on the wire just above my window looking in.   Now, I actually like crows – they are very intelligent birds.  I just wish they could learn to keep the caws a little quieter.

I find the Blue Jays will sit out in the trees and “scream” if their peanut feeder is empty when they drop in for a snack.  It is interesting how wildlife can become so accustomed to being accomodated and fed by us.

Enjoy!

Brown-headed Cowbird & Western Meadowlark

The above photos are of a female Brown-headed Cowbird taken at Oak Hammock Marsh.  These birds were foraging on the ground picking up insects.  Below is the male .

Below a Western Meadowlark at Oak Hammock Marsh. Meadowlarks are commonly found in grasslands areas and their song is beautiful and unmistakeable.

Enjoy!
