Snapping Turtle

I came across this Snapper sunning at the edge of a road near Lac du Bonnet.  It doesn’t have to worry about lazing around out in the open as there are no predators that would attack it.  These turtles can be very dangerous if one tries to handle them – definitely not advised!  They are fascinating creatures with body armour and scales reminiscent of their prehistoric ancestors.

Below is a close-up of the foot showing large claws used for digging and layers of scaled body armour.

Enjoy!

I still see them frequently in the Whiteshell, Kenora and Nopiming areas. They seem to love hanging out under docks when not sunning on a shoreline.
Thanks for your comment!

I love these guys! Great photos. I really like the last one where he’s on the move!

Is it just me, or are these guys a lot more rare than when I was a kid? I used to find them in the water all the time. I also used to find the little hatchings wondering around along the shore line.

Anyway, great find! Thanks for sharing.
