Sandhill Cranes

Found this pair of Sandhill Cranes on a recent visit to the Whiteshell area.  They really are large and beautiful birds.   There was a marshy area in behind the tree line and possibly chicks but I did not attempt to go into there and disturb the birds.   My reference book indicates brown plumage is juvenile stage but should lack the red crown and adults are grayish overall.  These birds were richly coloured brown tones but had the black bill and distinct red crown so I am not sure what stage they are at.  Looked like adults to me.

Enjoy!

Canada Day and Real Canadian Beavers

What is more Canadian than beavers with a sense of patriotism!   I am thinking they got some help with the flag but found this beaver lodge in the Whiteshell amusing.  My fireworks photos taken at an annual Canada Day event sponsored by Kevin Lamoureux, M.P. for Winnipeg North.

Enjoy!

Pileated Woodpecker

These large woodpeckers can be found through all seasons in Manitoba.  They are capable of making large holes in their favourite trees or hyrdo poles.  I have found them to be extremely skittish and will fly at the slightest movement so I am always feeling pretty lucky to get a photo of them.

Enjoy!
