House Wren

// September 30th, 2010 // No Comments » // Birds of Manitoba, Recent Posts, Urban Nature

This summer a little house wren frequented my yard.  I always knew when it was around because it was so noisy with its bubbly series of notes!  It seemed the wren’s little beak was opened each time I saw it.  Such a cute little bird and I hope they nest in our area again next year.  The wren also liked the chokecherry berries as did other feathered visitors.

Enjoy!

Rock Climbing Beaver

// September 26th, 2010 // No Comments » // beaver, Boreal Forest, Mammals, Nopiming Provincial Park, Recent Posts, Rodents

We were fishing one summer afternoon and from a distance saw an object moving up and down a rock face in Nopiming Provincial Park.  We moved closer to take a look and found this young beaver quite high up on the rocks.  It appeared to be dining on wild straberries growing in the rock crevices.  I love watching these animals  – when they are out and about they always have a purpose to what they are doing.    After a while, the beaver moved back down to water level,  slipped in and at that point slapped its tail for us.

Enjoy!

Odd Insects

// September 22nd, 2010 // No Comments » // Insects, Recent Posts, Urban Nature

I came across some insect photos in my collection the other day and thought they would be worth sharing.   Caterpillars come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours and can be quite attractive.   Their body armour and colours serve as warnings to predators as well as to camouflage them during their transitions.  Below, a very fuzzy caterpillar that curled up into a round ball when I touched it.

I have no idea what this bug is (below).  It was quite large, had long feathery antennae and appeared to be feeding on leaves.  It is not one that I recall seeing before.  Curious little insect!

Enjoy!
